Cost of Suffering a Critical Illness Event

Critical Illness

10th March 2009. A recent major survey has pointed out one other further cost of suffering a Critical Ilness event. One would have thought that suffering something such as a cancer would be bad enough, but a recent study by the American Medical Association came to the not surprising conclusion that a third of cancer sufferers (33.8%) were unemployed as compared to 15.2% of healthy respondents. Unemployment was higher among survivors of breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers but not higher in respondents who had prostate or testicular cancers. The researchers examined records for 20,366 cancer survivors and 157,603 healthy participants, mostly in the U.S. and Europe and research such as this underlines the need for health insurance such as Critical Illness insurance or Income Protection Insurance to try to soften the potentially devastating effect of a critical or long-term debilitating illness event.
